Reward makes the rhythmic sampling of spatial attention emerge earlier

چکیده

A growing body of evidence demonstrates a rhythmic characteristic spatial attention, with the corresponding behavioral performance fluctuating periodically. Here, we investigate whether and how attention is affected by reward—an important factor in attentional selection. We adopted classic cueing paradigm time-resolved stimulus-onset-asynchrony (SOA) between cue target such that responses to different phases could be examined. The color was associated either high or low level reward. Results showed low-frequency band (<2 Hz) where exogenous effects (i.e., facilitation inhibition return; IOR) appeared, reward enhanced late IOR effect through facilitating at uncued location. Recurring lower alpha power (alpha inhibition) which fluctuated low-theta frequency (2–3 observed cued location relative location, irrespective cue. Importantly, recurring emerged earlier (~120 ms) high-reward condition low-reward condition. propose implies sampling expectation makes periodic emerge earlier.

Verbal makes it positive, spatial makes it negative: working memory biases judgments, attention, and moods.

Prior research has suggested that emotion and working memory domains are integrated, such that positive affect enhances verbal working memory, whereas negative affect enhances spatial working memory (Gray, 2004; Storbeck, 2012). Simon (1967) postulated that one feature of emotion and cognition integration would be reciprocal connectedness (i.e., emotion influences cognition and cognition influe...

Does speech emerge from earlier appearing oral motor behaviors?

This investigation was designed to quantify the coordinative organization of mandibular muscles in toddlers during speech and nonspeech behaviors. Seven 15-month-olds were observed during spontaneous production of chewing, sucking, babbling, and speech. Comparison of mandibular coordination across these behaviors revealed that, even for children in the earliest stages of true word production, c...

Shifting spatial attention makes you flip: Exogenous visual attention triggers perceptual alternations during binocular rivalry.

Although it has been argued that visual attention and the dynamics of binocular rivalry are closely linked, strong evidence for this proposition is still lacking. Here, we investigate how perceptual alternations during binocular rivalry are affected by spatial attention by employing a cuing paradigm. We show a tight link between the occurrence of perceptual alternations and the spatiotemporal p...

Visual Attention: A Rhythmic Process?

Vision involves constant exploration of the environment by eye movements. Recent evidence suggests that a rhythmic form of exploration also occurs under covert attention, in the absence of eye movements. Sustained attention naturally fluctuates, with a periodicity in the theta (4-8 Hz) frequency range.

Phenomenal awareness can emerge without attention

In a recent debate, the views that top-down attention is necessary for consciousness (Cohen et al., 2012a,b) and that consciousness is independent of top-down attention (Tsuchiya et al., 2012) have clashed. Here, we list the overlooked or ignored arguments that should be considered before deciding that consciousness is inevitably the result of attention. The issue of relation of bottom-up atten...
